Russian Hound

Russian Hound - the oldest hunting breed

Representatives of this breed are incredibly similar to wolves both in appearance and behavior. The ancestors of the modern species are northern huskies and local hounds. According to historical records, "hounds" have been used in hunting since time immemorial. However, the first standard was established only in the nineteenth century on the territory of the Russian Empire. Today it is the most common and ancient breed of hunting dogs, possessing endurance, strength and an excellent sense of smell. Of course, this is not the whole range of advantages that Russian Hounds are endowed with.

Exterior

Undoubtedly, the Russian Hound has excellent eyesight, "sharp" hearing, and is also able to chase prey for a long time. These skills help to find absolutely any animal and even a cunning wolf. The breed has a wedge-shaped head with a powerful jaw and a not very pronounced transition from the forehead to the muzzle. The nose lobe is quite wide and somewhat protruding forward, colored black. Small floppy ears are triangular in shape, tightly fitting to the head of the specimen. When examined, it gives the impression of a harmoniously built dog with slightly elongated proportions.

Design

The description says that the dog is muscular, strong in the body and maneuverable in movement. It reaches a maximum of sixty-eight centimeters at the withers, depending on sex and age, while weighing an average of thirty kilos. The rib cage is wide and deep, reaching to the elbows. A straight and dry back smoothly turns into a short lower back. The limbs are strong, with good muscle mass. A distinctive feature of the structure is that the tail at rest should not be longer than the hock, but during running it should be higher than the back line, but not much.

Wool and color

The coat of the animal differs in length, for example, in the area of the ears, muzzle, limbs, the coat is somewhat shorter than on other parts of the body. The Russian Hound has a thick undercoat that saves the animal from heat and cold.

Typical colors are:

  • crimson;
  • red;
  • gray and tan.

Temperament and care

A tireless and versatile dog, devoted to its master and getting along well with all members of the household. The Russian Hound needs long walks and increased physical activity. The dog feels great both in the enclosure and in the backyard. This breed is best acquired by experienced dog breeders who are able to provide the necessary level of training and activity for a "four-legged comrade".

Keep in mind that at the time of walking with the pet in a public place, it should be kept on the habit, as its hunting instinct may kick in. The pet will not cause trouble in maintenance and gets along perfectly with other dogs. Many experts recommend that breeders make puppies bark in order to give them the sonorous barking that is so necessary when hunting. It is enough to follow the dog's lead at least once, and it will be almost impossible to restore authority.
